Many marketers and business owners believe an opt-in page is solely to have a database of customers whom they can send an offer to a month from now or a year from now. However, when visitors opt-in to your email list, it usually means that they have an itch to scratch. And you’re helping them scratch it with your lead magnet. You are offering a lead magnet in exchange for their email, right?
The lead magnet is crucial to let them know that you can help them scratch their itch. In other words, it will help them with the problem they’re trying to solve. Additionally, it will help you make a sale after they opt-in to your email list. Keep reading, and I’ll tell you the secret of how it’s done.
First, let’s take a walk and see how an email opt-in process works.
A user enters their email address on a form on your page. Usually, we use a squeeze page that is designed to capture emails. Then, as long as there aren’t too many hurdles for the email to be confirmed (such as a double opt-in), your new prospect will land on your thank you page.
The thank-you page is the virtual door to your business. This is the perfect opportunity to offer an upsell in addition to the lead magnet you offered them for free.
Remember, they didn’t resist giving you their personal information to help them scratch their itch for free. Now they’re excited to consume your information to see if it’s the solution for them. But, what if you show them a better solution with less effort on the thank page?
They are hot buyers at this point of the process because they think they finally found the solution to their problem! So, if you offer the right product with the right copy, and show them how their issue will be solved cheaper and faster, then your opt-in page will become a money machine and print you money.
“What if they don’t buy my upsell?”
If they don’t buy, don’t worry, you will give them a chance to buy with your welcome email sequence. You do use welcome email sequences, right? As they consume your lead magnet days after receiving it, show them you’re the solution to their problem. Give valuable advice and tips to build credibility, and don’t forget to remind them who you are and what you do. They’ll start seeing you as an expert in the field and will be more likely to buy from you in the future.
“But you said I could make money instantly from my opt-in?”
As you send these value-packed emails the days after they opt-in, add clear call-to-action links to your service or product. The more they trust you, the more likely they’ll buy from you. Don’t be afraid to offer a discount in these follow-up emails to entice them to buy. Once they buy from you once and you actually deliver on your promise, they’ll be ten times more likely to buy from you in the future.
“What if they still don’t buy?”
Not everybody that gives us their email will buy from us. At this point, try to take their perspective and see possibilities on why they didn’t buy. Maybe they had an emergency, or their itch wasn’t bad enough in the first place.
Either way, life happens. Don’t take it personally.
However, you know they have an itch to scratch, so be sure to keep them in the loop on what you are doing by adding them to your newsletter. You do have a newsletter, right?
